Cancon Modern Event – Meta Breakdown and Decklists

Cancon is a table top gaming convention in Canberra, Australia; hosted in part by The Games Capital, this convention has been going for 10+ years and this year CBR MTG has the chance to provide coverage of the top 8 of Modern. Modern top 8 footage will be posted to youtube.com/cbrmtg mid next week, until then let’s look at the meta report.

Modern as usual, has been very diverse at this 41 player event last Sunday: with 28 different decks being played. The usual suspects of Tron variants (5) and UWx Control (6) decks has made quite a large splash at this event with an interesting total of 0 Death’s Shadow.

The Top 8

1st Sean Doherty – Jeskai Geist

2nd Robert Huynh – Eldrazi and Taxes

3/4th Luke Burow – Jeskai Geist

3/4th Aaron Cornish – Naya Burn

5/8th Sunny Manoj – Tezzerator Stax

5/8th Ed Reeves – Bant Glittering Wish Control

5/8th Tom Dowling – Esper Mentor

The Top 8 had a bizarre mix of 7 different decks including a Tezzerator Stax brew that was an absolute blast to film. Sunny Manoj brought this deck with him from Sydney with his friend who had to work very early in the morning so suffice to say he was not expecting Sunny to make it all the way to the Top 8. Sunny was up against Luke Burow playing his Jeskai Geist deck, ruthlessly tuned for competitive play. After stabilising on 5~ life he successfully assembled the thopter sword combo and started gaining life and making thopters. Although he missed the chance to stop Luke drawing cards by saccing the thopters targeted by Electrolyze, making the spell fizzle, he did end up taking game one. This cemented Sunny as the underdog and had a small crowd behind him, bewildered and amazed by the absolute Jank being played in front of them.

This amazement was quelled immediately after as Luke played out the smattering of artifact hate he had out of the sideboard for Affinity. Luke ended up taking out the next two games to make it to the semis.

In the semis we also had CBR MTG regular Aaron Cornish on Naya Burn playing against Robert Huynh on Eldrazi and Taxes. This was a pleasure to watch as both players were cheery and jovial, as if they weren’t in the Top 4 of a 41 person event. This was possibly because both decks are so hilariously aggressive it’s mostly up to who drew the better 7. This was personified by game three when Robert was dead to literally any spell on the top of Aaron’s library and Aaron was dead on board. Aaron drew a land and Robert was off into the finals!

Robert would have to work hard for the next win in the finals because Sean was running hot, being the only 16 pointer at the end of the Swiss. Sean was running back his version of Jeskai Geist, opting for a more controlling list then Luke played in his previous match. Even though there was nearly no-one left in the hall and they were packing up the tables after a long weekend playing Magic, both Robert and Sean were enjoying themselves, chatting about their day and other games they play. Although Robert was laying down haymaker after haymaker, Sean was able to 1 for 1 him until Robert ran out of gas, allowing Sean to turn the corner and win out both games.

So congratulations Sean Doherty for taking out this year’s Modern Event at Cancon and please stay tuned for the footage going up on our YouTube channel.
